Pre-Health Information Management

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Pre-Dental Hygiene program prepares individuals to file application with dental hygiene programs in the state of Tennessee and Western Kentucky University.

Program requirements are outlined in the MTSU catalog. Students apply to a dental hygiene program after taking required prerequisite coursework to area universities having a dental hygiene program such as The University of Tennessee for the Health Science at Memphis, East Tennessee State University, Tennessee State University, or Western Kentucky University.

EMPLOYMENT OBJECTIVE: Dental Hygienist

DESCRIPTION OF HEALTH CAREER: A Dental Hygienist is that member of the dental team who is responsible for providing treatment that helps to prevent oral disease such as dental caries (cavities) and periodontal disease (gum disease). A hygienist also educates the patient in promoting oral health.

A dental hygienist may work in such practice settings as: private dental offices; dental clinics; federal, state and local health departments; hospitals; nursing homes; school districts; departments of education; educational programs for dental students; business, industry, and correctional facilities; private and public centers for pediatric, geriatric and special needs clients; and health maintenance organizations.

LENGTH OF PROGRAM: Two (2) years MTSU pre-dental hygiene program and two years dental hygiene program.
