Radiation Therapy Technology
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Radiation therapists administer radiation treatments to patients using a planned design to treat cancers in the body that have been previously diagnosed. The progressive improvement in the technology has led to a gradual increase in both cognitive abilities and general knowledge necessary to perform the tasks. Students take three years of prerequisite courses at MTSU, make application and attend an accredited radiation therapy program upon acceptance.
EMPLOYMENT OBJECTIVE: Radiotherapist in a radiation therapy unit, free-standing cancer centers, hospitals, and private offices.
DESCRIPTION OF HEALTH CAREER: Professional competence requires that radiation therapy technologists apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology, oncologic pathology, radiation oncology techniques, treatment planning procedures, and dosimetry in the performance of their duties. Effective communication with patients, other health professionals, and the public is required.
Radiotherapists must accept responsibility for administering a prescribed course of treatment, observing the patient during treatment, and maintaining pertinent records of the treatment. Additional duties may include tumor localization, dosimetry, patient follow-up, and patient education. Radiation therapy technologists must have a stable, self-assured personality and must display attributes of compassion, concern, and competence in meeting the special needs of the oncology patient.
LENGTH OF PROGRAM: 4 years, Three years pre requisites at MTSU and one year in an accredited radiation therapy program. (Active Affiliation Vanderbilt Medical Center Radiation Therapy Program)
