Summer Research Opportunities and Internships

The NSF Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) is a fellowship designed to expose students to academic research and prepare them for careers in the sciences.  Students can apply to over one hundred REU programs at colleges and universities across the United States as well as internationally.  A list of research programs and participating universities can be found at (http://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/reu_search.jsp).

If you are a rising sophomore or junior looking to gain hands-on research experience, travel to a new part of the country, and get paid a healthy stipend while doing it, you should consider applying to the NSF-REU program.  Undergraduate research experience is looked on favorably in many graduate and professional schools, and the REU program provides an excellent means to get that experience.  Students must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States to apply.  Applications are sent directly to participating universities, and each university requires slightly different information.

For rising seniors that are interested in applying to graduate school, NSF also offers the graduate research fellowship (GRP), which provides research support for three years of post-graduate study in science, mathematics, and engineering, as well as a healthy stipend.  Undergraduates that are awarded GRP fellowships are very successful in joining top research groups in graduate programs across the country.

For more information about these and other undergraduate research opportunities in the sciences, as well as tips for applying and how to get the most out of the program, come to an information session on October 8th, 2013 in HONR106 from 4:00-5:00 pm, hosted by Dr. R. Drew Sieg.
