CURRENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach CHEM 1020 (Introductory Chemistry), CHEM 3530 (Biochemistry) and PSCI 1030 (Physical Science).
  • Coordinate the Biochemistry lab.
  • Coordinate the Pre-Dental Hygiene program as well as serve as advisor to Pre-Dental Hygiene students and the Delta Delta Sigma (the MTSU Chapter of American Student Dental Association).
  • Serve on the advisory board for Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics (EYH) for young women in grades 5-8.
  • Direct graduate and undergraduate research
  • Serve on the Chemistry Departmental Social Committee
  • Serve on the Committee for Instructional Media Resources Circulation Policy

RESEARCH INTERESTS:

  • Study of cigarette smoke mutagenicity via the analysis of DNA adducts resulting from tobacco toxicants
  • Investigation of the influence of yeast enzymes on wine composition and the transformation of anthocyanins during wine aging
  • Determining the relationships of wine and non-wine yeast strains by DNA sequence analysis of the rDNA genes and interspacer regions
  • Comparison of the fermentation by-products of wine and non-wine yeast
  • Study the effects of different isomeric forms of 2,3-butanediol on the quality of wine
  • Study the inhibitory effects of xylitol and other polyols on the growth of cavities causing bacteria, Streptococcus mutans
  • Development of methods for the analysis of yeast metabolites produced by the transformation of phenanthrene
  • Studying the effects of glucose on the yield of xylitol produced from biomass-derived products by yeast
