EDUCATION/INTERESTS:

(1979) B.S., Emory University; Ph.D., University of Georgia; Postdoctoral, University of Pittsburgh. Organic Chemistry. My research objectives allow individualized studies to be extracted that match the interests and schedules of both graduate and undergraduate students. Synthetic strategies employ modern chemical reactions such as O-alkylation of sterically hindered phenols using phase-transfer catalysis, hydroquinone oxidation by solid-supported reagents, Friedel-Crafts alkylation and aldol condensation through heterogeneous catalysis, and olefin oxidation employing crown ethers. Student research projects may incorporate these chemical reactions into synthetic schemes or whole studies can be centered on understanding the mechanism of any one of them. Other related projects are based on the spectroscopic properties (especially NMR and GC-MS) of these products and/or reaction systems or on the analytical chemistry of the reagents involved. In all of this work, the education and career goals of the student come first and largely determine the particular research project that is recommended.
