Dr. Tormey has taught in the English Department in various roles since 1995. He became an Assistant Professor in 2004 and earned his doctorate in 2008. Changes in university policy facilitated his reclassification to Lecturer in 2013. A scholar of Medieval and Early Renaissance Literature by training, he maintains interests in these fields as well as in Milton Studies, the epic tradition, economic history, scientific and technical history, ecocriticism, sports literature, popular culture, and technical writing. He serves the department primarily by teaching upper division writing courses and a Special Topics course on Modern American Environmental Literature. He has also taught in the "Great Books in Tennessee Prisons" Program since 2007.
