Biographical Note
Andy Womack was born 1945 in Bedford County, Tennessee. His family moved to Murfreesboro when he was young, and he remained there as an adult. Womack began a college education, but was drafted into service in Vietnam. He served in the 4th Infantry Division and eventually worked his way up to the rank of sergeant. He then returned to school at Middle Tennessee State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduating from Middle Tennessee State University, Womack worked first for New York Life Insurance Company and then for State Farm Insurance.
Womack served as a Tennessee State Senator from 1988-2000, spending part of that time as Chair of the Senate Education Committee. As a senator, he sponsored many bills, primarily relating to education, veterans’ affairs, and insurance law.
Scope and Content
Records of the Andy Womack collection range from 1976-2000, with the bulk ranging from 1990-2000. Records were kept in original order as much as possible. The first box contains personal correspondence and ephemera from events Womack attended as a Senator. These were not produced by his office but were other events that he attended. The second box contains newspaper clippings, and the remaining two boxes contain Senate Bills sponsored by Womack.
Series 1: Personal Correspondence and Ephemera contains personal cards, notes, correspondence, campaign materials, newsletters mentioning Andy Womack, and personal memorabilia dating from 1990-2001, with some being undated. Materials include Christmas cards, notes congratulating the Senator’s support or dissent for certain issues, pins, and flyers, graduation programs, and certificates.
Series 2: Newspaper Clippings contains copies of newspaper clippings, mostly of stories referring to Senator Womack. Most clippings are sorted by date, from 1976-2000, with one folder of undated clippings and one folder of clippings regarding Bob Womack.
Series 3: Senate Papers contains Senate bills sponsored by Andy Womack. These bills were submitted in 1999 and 2000. They have been maintained in original order, as well as can be determined. Each file has a short summary of information relating to the proposed legislation, such as dates introduced and the House sponsor, if any. The bills were arranged based on this information. Titles of bills, including capitalization, have been retained in this finding aid.
Associated Materials
A campaign pin and bumper sticker are kept with the Albert Gore Research Center museum collections.
