Biotechnology studies prepare students for careers in the management of bioscience firms and organizations. Opportunities include research science positions in laboratories applying biotechnology to problems in medicine, industry and agriculture and management positions in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. With the growth of positions in the biotechnology industry in Tennessee and nationwide, the demand for persons with training in both biological science and management is expected to grow significantly.
Middle Tennessee State University, in conjunction with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, is offering the Master of Science in Professional Science degree program. The MS-PS is a new type of two-year degree in the sciences and mathematics that equips people for work in public and private business enterprises (or corporate America) and in academia. The goal for this degree is to enhance the interface between science and business by providing strong degrees which emphasize expertise in both of these areas.
The Masters of Science in Professional Science combines the business management skills commonly found in the traditional MBA type program with advanced learning in specific science fields. The Professional Science Masters (as it is commonly called) includes a business core with specific concentrations in the areas of actuarial sciences, biostatistics, biotechnology, engineering management, geosciences and health care informatics.
