Cornerstone Donors: Ronnie Steine
Ronnie Steine
Metro Councilman-at-Large
Nashville, Tennessee
Ronnie Steine was re-elected Metro Councilman-at-Large in 2011, following his election
to that seat in 2007. He previously served as Councilman-at-Large from 1991 to 1999.
He was elected Nashville's fifth Vice Mayor in 1999 and served until his resignation
in 2002. He is the former co-owner of Sailair Travel, Inc.
On the Council, Steine serves on the Budget & Finance, Education, and Convention,
Tourism and Public Entertainment Facilities Committees. He was Chair of Budget and
Finance for 2009-10. He also serves on the Metro Greenways Commission, the Leadership
Council of the Nashville Afterschool Zone Alliance, and the Metro Audit Committee.
Steine recently served Mayor Karl Dean as Co-Chair of his Blue-Ribbon Task Force to
create a Child and Youth Master Plan, which was presented to the Mayor in May of 2010.
He currently is a member of the CYMP Advisory Team.
Steine has been an acknowledged leader during his time on the Council, as evidenced
by the readers of the Nashville Scene naming him Best Metro Council Member for four
consecutive years from 1994-97. He played a principal role in issues such as the General
Hospital-Meharry merger, the Titans' relocation to Nashville, the building of the
Public Library system and the Music City Center, and the creation of the Tree Ordinance
and the Urban Forester. Steine has been a strong supporter of increased education
and public safety funding. Steine's leadership on youth issues led to the creation
of the Mayor's Office of Children and Youth and the Mayor's Youth Council. He is a
well-known advocate for quality-of-life issues such as the arts, sports, and greenways.
From 1995 until 2000, Steine served as Executive Director of the Oasis Center, a
non-profit organization that helps troubled teens and provides an opportunity for
teens to help others. While always passionate about the area's youth, this job provided
Steine with a daily understanding of the pressures, problems, and strengths of our
teenagers. In 2008, he was appointed to the National League of Cities Youth, Education
and Families Council and has now been appointed Vice-Chair for 2010-11. Last year
he received the National Alliance on Afterschool's prestigious Champions Award for
his efforts.
Previously, he was awarded the prestigious Good Guy Award from the Nashville Women's
Political Caucus and was a 1999 finalist for the ANE non-profit CEO of the Year Award.
Currently, Steine serves on the boards of the Adventure Science Center, the Nashville
Children's Theater, the Oasis Center, and the United Neighborhood Health Services
Board. Governor Phil Bredesen appointed him to the Tennessee Commission on Holocaust
Education. He is a past President of Congregation Micah, and he is also a member of
The Temple, Congregation Ohabi Shalom and the Corinthian Masonic Lodge #414. He is
a graduate of Leadership Nashville and Leadership Music and is in the 2010-11 Class
of Leadership Donelson-Hermitage.
Steine has a bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt University and a JD from the Vanderbilt
School of Law. He is married to Beverly Keel and he has one son, David, 20.
