About CEDL
Dean's Message

Welcome to the College of Continuing Education and Distance Learning. We understand that the educational needs and wants of individuals cover a broad range and we have striven to develop programs that meet this extensive variety of needs.

Our college has four primary divisions which are designed to service the needs of our constituent audience.  These divisions, which operate under the administrative offices of the college, are:

  • Academic Outreach and Distance Learning
  • Summer School
  • Contracts and Public Service
  • Professional Development

While each group is tasked with meeting specific needs they often work in concert to facilitate the processes required to do so with fine tuned efficiency.  We take great pride in the level of customer service that is provided throughout our college.

Our Academic Outreach and Distance Learning division manages all distance learning programs, off campus programs, evening school, some graduate degree programs, video conferencing courses, and correspondence programs.  Our extremely popular Adult Degree Completion Program, which is designed to facilitate working adults returning to school for their bachelor degree, is managed by this division.  In the last 24 months hundreds of Tennesseans have returned to school through this program to complete their education.  The Regents Online Degree Program (RODP), which is a consortium program developed by the Tennessee Board of Regents for all TBR schools, is managed for MTSU by this group.

Our Summer School office manages all of the administrative aspects of the summer school program for the entire university.  This office provides the support to faculty and staff which is critical in making the summer program successful.

The Contracts and Grants division manages all programs that are administered through various contracts as well as state and federal grants.  This group also works with other departments and colleges at the university to extend the services of the university to the public.  One specific program run out of this office is the Prevention Through Understanding program which trains Sudden Infant Death (SIDS) first responders state wide.  Nearly 10,000 individuals are trained in this program each year.

Our Professional Development division manages hundreds of not-for-credit educational programs that are designed to meet specific needs of the public, corporations, state agencies, and other individuals and groups.  The issuance and tracking of all Continuing Education Units (CEU) for the university are handled by this office.  While the vast majority of their programs are offered in an online environment, they also manage a few ‘on ground’ courses, including the highly successful Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program.  This office provides education programs to thousands of people every year.

Our overriding mission in all our departments is to provide programs that meet the ongoing educational needs of adult and non traditional students through various modalities to meet their time and travel constraints. To put it simply, we strive to get you from where you are educationally to where you want to be as quickly and conveniently as possible.
