It is important to remember that the same techniques that work in a face-to-face classroom may not work in an online course. Preparation time for a distance learning class usually involves about two to three times as much work as preparation for a face-to-face class. There are several outcomes to think about when designing an online course. It is important to promote active interaction both with course content and personal communication. Students will gain more from the course if they have an avenue to communicate directly with one another. Sharing of resources among students is helpful to course outcome. Finally, there should be an online avenue to critically evaluate each other's work as a way of learning and growing as a student. Although there is no face-to-face interaction when teaching an online course, there are still ways to successfully promote active learning and engage students in the class (Richlin, L. Blueprint for Learning).
