College of Media & Entertainment Candidates

Timothy Bassett

If I was elected to run for Senate in Student Government to improve the quality of student life? What would I do? First, I would improve on the academic rate and to get every college student at Middle Tennessee State University above a 3.0 GPA .Second, I would work very hard to give the students what they need not what they want. Also, by offering more student scholarships on campus which will bring more undergraduates to attend Middle Tennessee State University in the upcoming years. Third, I would create more events on campus dealing with diversity and more on campus activities for our foreign department and actually learn about different parts of culture around campus. Last but not least, I would improve on campus housing because by doing that you will attract more freshmen to actually live on campus their first year instead of moving off.

If I were selected to serve for SGA, one of the things I would do to improve student life at MTSU would be to pass legislation to further insure bus accountability. I, as well as multiple students, have expressed concerns regarding limited busses around peak times at night. These peak times include but are not limited to 5:30 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 6:30 p.m.; these specific times correlate with the times 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. classes generally end. This legislation would insure an extra bus be placed on each route or even increased reliability of at least one bus on each route during peak times. The addition of a bus or the accountability of a single bus would create a safer campus during darker times at night. Finally, the reliability of a bus would make off and on campus students feel more comfortable and secure when their class ends.

If elected to serve the Student Government Association, I would improve the quality of student life by recognizing and adhering to 3 main tenets:

  • The innate worth of the individual student in order to provide diverse thought and evaluation of his or her experience at Middle Tennessee State University.
  • The democratic nature of this organization, and of our University as a whole.
  • The universal principles of equality and fairness under which this democratic organization and University may prosper.

By reminding ourselves of these three ideologies on a regular basis, I firmly believe that we, the students of Middle Tennessee State University, can foster and nourish the potential of this University that has been the foundation of education in Middle Tennessee for over 100 years, so that we may lay the groundwork for the next 100 to come.

If the student body was to elect me to represent the voice and opinions of the College of Media and Entertainment, I would ensure that their best interest was always taken into consideration when decisions were made. As a member of the Student Government Association Senate, I would actively participate in the enhancement of the overall campus environment as well as the quality of student life. If elected, I will make myself available to any student who would like to voice their opinion on a recent piece of legislation that was passed, and share their ideas for potential future legislation.

If I were selected to serve for the SGA senate a second time, I would push to have more events for students throughout the year rather than just at the very beginning. This will help students open up to more to the older students and their fellow peers a lot better, and will keep the students more occupied in a positive way other than just getting buried in academics.

If selected to serve for SGA,  I would improve student life by taking the approach in reaching out to freshmen as well as having current students complete surveys asking what they would like to see improved on our campus. There is no better way to find out what someone wants, than to ask. I believe that freshmen are very important to campus and by making their freshman year a success, it sets the foundation for the rest of their collegiate career at MTSU. The surveys would help keep upperclassmen involved by asking what they already like about MTSU and what we as SGA and as a community could do to improve it.

My Sophomore year, I served on the SGA Election Committee, and that was a very enlightening experience for me. I would like to become a senator in SGA so I can provide valuable contributions and ideas in order to further better this institution, and provide an excellent environment for the students of MTSU. If accepted, I will not only fulfill my role and obligations, but go above and beyond to ensure that students receive the assistance and service they deserve while attending this university. I am also a firm believer in establishing connections and friendships with those around me, and will be readily available for those in need of information or other services at MTSU to the best of my ability.
