Tennessee Girls in STEM

Tennessee Girls in STEM (TGIS) Conference

While recent state law does not allow public institutions like MTSU to mandate the wearing of face masks except under severe and specific conditions (which include a declaration by the governor of a COVID-specific state of emergency), we strongly recommend their use while inside campus buildings or when social distancing is impractical.

This year’s conference will be held on the MTSU campus. Parents will drop their children off beginning at 8:00 a.m. at SCI (Atrium) and pick them up at LRC (221). See Schedule below for more information.

Emily Oppmann is a 2021 graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology with a concentration in genetics and biotechnology and minors in chemistry and global studies. She continued her studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, earning a master of science degree in genetic counseling. She is currently employed as a certified genetic counselor specializing in oncology genetics at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute in Fairfax, VA. Throughout her middle school and high school years, Emily was an annual participant in Tennessee Girls in STEM. After enrolling at MTSU, she worked as a group leader and student coordinator for the conference. She is so excited to once again return to TGIS to share her passion for genetics and genetic counseling with the next generation of women in the sciences.
