Advisor Mastery Program (AMP) Workshops

These workshops will focus primarily on advisor skill-building and knowledge-building. Potential topics include:

• Technical/Software/Administrative skills (Excel, TEAMS, ARGOS, reading high school transcripts, etc.)
• Advising approaches and best practices
• Legal/Ethical issues in advising
• Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Workshops will be offered twice a month, and will generally be worth 1 point (unless otherwise stated). Workshops will vary in terms of being offered in-person or via zoom.

Students often don't have intrinsic motivation for a variety of reasons, including being first generation, having a victim mindset, having lawnmower parents, and other factors. Advisors often perform tasks for students that they could complete themselves; it can be quicker and easier than teaching them how, but it doesn't help them or us in the long run. Additionally, students are future employees, parents, and community members who need to be independent. They have often had everything done for them, and thus haven't had the opportunity to learn and grow for themselves.

Advisors can employ techniques to help student gain self-sufficiency and take ownership of their own education. You’ll receive realistic action steps you can use in your advising encounters to "teach your students to fish!"
