How scholarship recipients are chosen

Selection is based on the “whole person” concept: academic record, SAT or ACT test results, school evaluations, extra-curricular activities, leadership and athletics, and a personal interview with a scholarship board at the desired university.

Since the Army, like many of today’s top organizations, values technological skills, scholarship preference is given to students pursuing degrees in engineering, physical sciences, and nursing, but all MTSU academic majors qualify to compete for scholarships.

The ROTC Scholarship Opportunity

Interested in Army ROTC but do not want to go on Active Duty and move away from your Home or Community? Army ROTC has the ability to ensure that you can stay in your Community and still serve in the Army as a Reserve Soldier.

You could earn a scholarship for either the National Guard or the Army Reserve and guarantee that you do not have to leave your community to serve as an Officer in the Army. This option allows individuals to be on scholarship, provide guaranteed service in the National Guard or Army Reserve and requires the student to participate in the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP). Scholarship money can be used for either Room and Board or Tuition and Fees.

If Scholarship money is used towards Room and Board, Federal (and possibly State) Tuition Assistance can be used in conjunction with Scholarship money to pay for tuition.  For eligible members of the Tennessee National Guard, the TN S.T.R.O.N.G Act can be used to pay for Tuition and Fees, allowing the Cadet to apply the ROTC Scholarship towards Room and Board.

If Scholarship money is used for Tuition and Fees, then Federal/State Tuition Assistance cannot be used for Room and Board.

Make Your Training And Experience Pay Off

The Army ROTC Green to Gold Programs seek talented young enlisted soldiers who have decided to:

  • Leave, or are considering leaving, active duty to attend college to earn baccalaureate degrees and commission as second lieutenants (this is the Green to Gold Scholarship Option Program ).
  • Remain on active duty to attend college to earn baccalaureate degrees and commission as second lieutenants (this is the Green to Gold Active Duty Option Program ).

Quality enlisted soldiers with officer potential who have served at least two years on active duty are allowed to voluntarily participate and enroll in Army ROTC.

The MTSU Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program is a leadership and management training program that offers 4, 3, or 2 year scholarships which pay full tuition and fees (for in-state or out-of-state status), $1,200 yearly ($600/semester) book allowance and a stipend of $420 per month.  Additionally, Nursing students as Cadets can receive additional monetary benefits for good grades, NCLEX-RN review course and test fees, uniforms, clinical and laboratory fees, malpractice insurance, immunization and testing courses.  Because admittance to the Nursing Program is so selective, a Nurse student who passes a medical exam, possesses good character and passes a physical fitness test can be fully eligible to receive an Army ROTC Nursing Scholarship.  The army ROTC course is tailored for Nursing students with full emphasis and priority placed on the demanding nurse curriculum.  Nursing graduates who complete their BSN degrees and pass their NCLEX-RN exam are designated as US Army commissioned officers in the Army Nurse Corps.
