JCB Faculty Technology Survey Spring 2022

The survey had a total of 83 respondents which is an increase of 5% in response rate compared to the previous survey conducted in 2013. We can divide the survey into four sections: teaching technologies, teaching methodologies & modalities, master classroom issues, and professional development opportunities. Below is a summary of the responses.

Teaching Technologies

The good news is that the overwhelming majority (96%) of faculty/instructors use D2L.
This represents a 31% increase compared to our last survey in 2013.

• The top used features in D2L still are: Content 98%, Grades 98%, Dropbox 95%
  Followed by News 88%, Class List 84%, Discussions 83%, Quizzes 82%
• 54% of our faculty reported using external learning resources. This represents a 42% increase from our last survey.
  • The top used resources are MH Connect 20%, Cengage MindTap/SAM 13%, and Simulations 6%
• 67% of our faculty create video tutorials for their classes. This represents a 65% increase from our last survey.
  • 80% reported using Panopto, 30% reported using Camtasia
• 65% of our faculty use the automatic classroom webcast & recording system
  • The main reason to use the system: support students that miss class
  • The main reasons NOT to use the system are privacy and too many tech problems
• • The most requested technologies/software to use in classes are¹:
  • TopHat, clickers, and polling 15%
  • HyFlex classroom, omnidirectional microphone, and cameras 7%
  • Attendance capture technology 2%
• Main challenges regarding the use of technology
  • Our faculty cited lack of time (66%) and lack of tech skills (40%) as the main challenges regarding the use of technology.

Teaching Methodologies & Modalities

The most used teaching methodologies (as reported by faculty) are:

• Active Learning 45%, Problem Based Learning 41%, Experiential Learning (EXL) 39%
  Followed by: Flipped Classroom 36%, Game-based Learning 19%, and Simulations 1%

The most used teaching modalities (as reported by faculty):

• The responses show the majority of our faculty teaches multiple class modalities, with face-to-face and online classes being the most common.
• 89% teach online classes, 82% teach face-to-face classes, 39% teach hybrid classes
• 40% of our faculty teach both: face-to-face and online classes
• 30% of our faculty teach face-to-face, online and hybrid classes
• 14% of our faculty teach only online classes
• 6% of our faculty teach only face-to-face classes

Master Classroom Issues

The most reported master classroom problems are:

• The microphones are not charged, need an omnidirectional ceiling microphone
• Remote recorder devices issues: camera/desktop not showing, recording not saved in the correct course folders, not being copied to all course folders, etc.
• Doc cam issues (dim image, how to use it, etc.) / Need a better camera / Projector over whiteboard issues
• Wireless network speed not good
• Slow pc in classroom
• Lights in the room are too close to the screen / No automatic blinds in the room
• Software issues: Adobe not working, MS Teams starting at login, Excel features missing

Professional Development

• D2L training, developing D2L courses, how to engage students in Zoom/D2L
• HyFlex, Qualtrics, PowerBI, M-Turk training
• How to make better videos for lectures
• A full-size Lightboard installation
• Training on Matlab, SAS, SPSS, STATA, PLS

The Jones College of Business strives to provide the best IT services and support possible to all our patrons, faculty, staff and students. This page identifies the main issues raised in the technology survey and actions items to address them. We will focus on providing the best service possible within our limitations. Below you will find a list of the top issues and requests, alternatives to address them and current status as we progress – some items required the coordination with other units such as ITD, MTSU Online, facilities services, etc. Please note that this document is not oriented to provide an exhaustive list of options or solutions. Polling: TopHat & clickers	When we talk about engaging students, one of the top topics is student polling. We have several polling options:
	Anonymous polling with PowerPoint and MS Forms Available to all faculty and students free of charge. See instructions here and here. It could also be used for for non-anonymous polls. Please contact us if you need help with this feature. Not integrated with D2L.	Available now!
	Turningpoint Clickers are available to all faculty free of charge.  See instructions here. Various quantities (15, 30, 60) Not integrated with D2L.	Available now!
	Option: NearPod Free for up to 40 students, 100MB storage. Requires app for students. Requires some basic training. More information here.  Not integrated with D2L.	Available now!
	Option: Top Hat (not available at this time) Top Hat supports polling (anonymous & non-anonymous),  discussions and attendance tracking. It is already integrated with  D2L. However, it requires an annual license and training. We are investigating this alternative.	No funds available
HyFlex classrooms	Several mentioned the need for HyFlex classrooms (multiple cameras, ceiling microphones, interactive boards, etc.) We are taking several steps to address this request.
	Entered TAF proposal to make BAS S337 a fully HyFlex classroom	Proposal approved
	Working with ITD classrooms to install ceiling microphones in  several BAS classrooms using HERF funds. ITD plans to install ceiling microphones in 13 BAS master classrooms.	ITD completed  Summer 2022.

Attendance capture	Several faculty mentioned the need for attendance capture technology, especially in large sections. This type of technology could be expensive and  requires infrastructure investments. We are investigating some alternatives.
	Use MS Forms (free) Requires students to install the mobile app and log in to it. But, it is not integrated with D2L. Requires faculty to manage and  aggregate the responses.	Info published in website.
	Option: Use iClicker or Top Hat (paid) Both options have an associated cost and are integrated with D2L. Top Hat could provide polling, discussions and attendance tracking for all the College of Business classes!	No funds available

Discussion board	In the Fall of 2021 we tested two discussion forum alternatives. Both products were easy to use and provided increased student engagement. Both products have associated licensing costs. Some options are:
	Use D2L discussion board  (free)	Available now!
	Use MS Teams for class discussions Available to all faculty and students free of charge. You could create a “team” for your class – even merge all classes under a single team. Please contact us if you need help with this feature. Not integrated with D2L.	Available now!
	Use Top Hat discussion feature (paid) Not as feature-rich as other dedicated discussion products. Integrated with D2L. Top Hat could provide polling, discussions and attendance tracking for all the College of Business classes!	No funds available

Classroom hardware	Several faculty reported issues with the camera, remote recorders, microphone batteries, doc cam, projection screen, whiteboards, wireless and, slow teacher computers. Some steps being taking are:
