Fitness & Wellness Positions
Employees in the Fitness & Wellness Program within MTSU Campus Recreation are to assist with the operation and implementation of group fitness classes, personal training programs, wellness events, and nutrition education that is provided for the MTSU community at large. All employees will promote the mission of the department through example, leadership, and customer service.
Position Description
Group Exercise Instructors are responsible for teaching classes for a range of abilities and levels. Instructors are certified in specific formats including cycle, dance fitness, yoga, and general group fitness. Classes typically range from 30 minutes to 60 minutes in the early morning, lunch time, and evening. Instructors also work with other programs and departments both within Campus Rec and externally to implement joint health and wellness initiatives at MTSU.
Position Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare and instruct safe and effective classes
- Provide fun and motivational instruction that also includes the education of benefits in classes
- Demonstrate and instruct proper technique and modifications utilizing verbal and physical cues
- Monitor participants and adjust class as needed
- Create a welcoming class environment for all fitness levels and encourage participants
- Utilize the appropriate equipment for the specific format and teach safe practices for use
- Arrive at least 10 minutes prior to class and stay after until all participants have left
- Confirm and check in class attendees on Rec Portal
- Explain and teach participants how to utilize the Rec Portal for registration and cancellations
- Support, participate, and lead additional special events or classes outside of set schedule
- Maintain organization and sanitation of studio equipment
- Understand and enforce Campus Recreation and area-specific policies and guidelines
- Attend all required staff trainings, in-services, and workshops
Required Skills
- Knowledge on properly structuring and leading group fitness classes
- Awareness and practice of an instructor’s limitations and scope of practice
- Excellent time management and communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
Qualifications
- Current MTSU student
- Current nationally accredited Group Fitness Instructor certification or approved specialty certification
- Experience teaching classes preferred
Anticipated Schedule/Hours
- Classes are typically schedule between 6:45am-7:30am, 12:15pm-12:45pm, and 4:00pm-8:00pm
- Length of classes varies from 30-60 minutes based on format, time of day, and space available
- Opportunities to teach additional classes for special events and programs arise throughout the semester

Personal trainers are responsible for guiding clients towards a healthier lifestyle through education and motivation. Students holding this position must be able to develop, document, and implement one-on-one workout programs that matches the needs and goals of clients. Personal Trainers also work with other programs and departments both within Campus Rec and externally to implement joint health and wellness initiatives at MTSU.
Position Responsibilities
- Assist the client in determining realistic and safe goals that coincide with their current health status and fitness level
- Assess a health history to determine any prior approval needed from a health care provider
- Use motivational interviewing to learn about the client needs and build rapport
- Complete fitness assessments to identify the current skill and ability of the client
- Create individualized workouts to lead client through during each session
- Instruct clients on and demonstrating proper lifting and exercise techniques
- Monitor and document progress client progress
- Maintain the scope of practice within the confines of their certification and refer out when necessary
- Organize and maintain confidential client information and paperwork
- Track redemption of client sessions on Fusion (Campus Rec member software)
- Understand and enforce Campus Recreation and area-specific policies and guidelines
- Maintain organization and sanitation of equipment
- Assist in at least 1 Fitness & Wellness special event or program each semester
- Train clients as a Fitness Specialist for the MyFit program as needed
- Attend all required staff trainings, in-services, and workshops
Required Skills
- Knowledge of properly structuring training sessions and making adaptions to programs
- Awareness and practice of a trainer’s limitations and scope of practice
- Strong time management and communication skills
- Detail oriented and self-motivated
Qualifications
- Current MTSU student
- Current nationally accredited Personal Training Certification
- Experience training clients preferred
- Available to work flexible hours

- Sessions are scheduled based on trainer/client availability within the operating hours of the Recreation Center
- Training sessions are typically 1 hour, but can be 30 minutes based on client needs
- Trainers are expected to arrive early to prepare and stay after to complete paperwork

The MyFit program provides clients with a personalized, 4-week workout programs their matches the needs, goals, and access. Fitness Specialist are responsible for guiding clients towards a healthier lifestyle through education and motivation, and providing them with the education and skills to complete their program independently. Fitness Specialist also work with other programs and departments both within Campus Rec and externally to implement joint health and wellness initiatives at MTSU.

- Develop a 4-week workout program that fits their needs and goals
- Demonstrate and/or check for proper lifting and exercise techniques used in the workout program
- Provide support to the client through communication and check-ins throughout the program
- Maintain the scope of practice within the confines of their certification and refer out when necessary
- Organize and maintain confidential client information and paperwork
- Track redemption of client sessions on Fusion (Campus Rec member software)
- Understand and enforce Campus Recreation and area-specific policies and guidelines
- Maintain organization and sanitation of equipment

- Completion of EXSC 4230 (Exercise Prescription and Program Planning), or equivalent course, with a B- or higher
- OR have a current, nationally recognized personal training certification
- Experience training clients preferred

- MyFit sessions are 30 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes based on the session
