CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR STANDARDS: REFLECTIVE QUESTIONS

Question 9:

A female student comes into class short of breath and quickly reports to her instructor that she is being stalked and was followed to class. She tells the instructor that she is afraid that she may be in danger. The instructor quickly realizes that this could be a dangerous situation for the student and the entire class.

What is your response?

How would you handle this situation?

  • Use your judgment as far as immediately dismissing the rest of the class.
  • Call Campus Police, 615-898-2424, to ask for help and further instructions.
  • If Phoebe leaves the area, do not try to stop her or try to catch up with her. While waiting for the police, call and update your academic administrator/other designated personnel.
  • Report this student of concern to the SACC by calling Dr. Mary Kaye Anderson at 615-898-2670. The SACC group will gather available information about a particular student of concern and make decisions about possible appropriate interventions.


Question 10:

An instructor informs a disruptive student that the student must leave the classroom for the remainder of the class session. The student immediately becomes belligerent and informs the instructor that he [the student] pays the instructor's salary and threatens to file a civil lawsuit because he has a right to be in class.

  • Call Campus Police, 615-898-2424 and wait for them to arrive.
  • You have the option to immediately dismiss the class.
  • If the disruptive student leaves the area, do not try to intervene.
  • Report the situation to your academic administrator/other designated personnel.
  • Report the situation to the Office of Student Conduct, 615-898-2570. The Dean of Student Life will assist you in determining your next steps. Report this student of concern to the Student Assistance Coordinating Committee by calling Dr. Mary Kaye Anderson, 615-898-2670. The SACC group will gather available information about a particular student of concern and make decisions about possible appropriate interventions.
