The History and Structure of English Words 

In her first session (The History and Structure of English Words), Dr. Marcia Henry takes teachers through the progression and development of oral and written English as well as the processes that sedimented spelling. By exploring the origins of English words, Dr. Henry highlights instructional practices for reading, writing, and vocabulary instruction that can aid learners of all levels.

Phonemes and Morphemes: Building Blocks for Decoding and Spelling

In session two (Morphemes: Building Blocks for Decoding and Spelling), Dr. Henry drills down into specific instructional activities for teaching Anglo-Saxon, Latin, and Greek-based words, as well as how the teaching of such words can support vocabulary acquisition, spelling, and comprehension.

About the Presenter

Dr. Marcia HenryDr. Marcia Henry has over 50 years of experience working with language acquisition and dyslexia. She has served as a tutor, teacher, clinician, and professor. Dr. Henry provides teacher training related to reading and language arts, and she consults with school districts and states on informed reading instruction.  Dr. Henry is the author of  WORDS: Integrated Spelling and Decoding Instruction Based on Word Origin and Word Structure as well as Unlocking Literacy: Effective Decoding and Spelling Instruction. She is primary author of the resource Patterns for Success in Reading and Spelling.

She is a fellow in the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators. She is a past-president of The International Dyslexia Association, and she received the Margaret Byrd Rawson Lifetime Achievement Award from IDA in 2000.
