This volume surveys the major films, filmmakers, and cinema institutions of each era in American film history from four perspectives: as artistic expressions; as economic propositions; as products of and catalysts for social influences; and as representations of technological advances. In doing so, he provides a methodological basis for studying film, drawing on current thinking and writing.
