Examity Information for Students

Here is some information about the new Examity Integration that we will be using at MTSU. Examity is an Online Proctoring software. It will be up to your instructor if your classes will use it or not. 

If you are concerned about security, please feel free to view Examity's "Privacy & Security" webpage. (Examity will never ask for your financial information...MTSU has bought a site-wide license for the product's use.)

Tips for Test-Taking Success

  • Log in using the SSO link from the course page and create a profile ahead of time.
  • Ensure that your system and testing environment meet Examity’s requirements, which include:
    • macOS X 10.5 or higher, Windows Vista or higher. Examity does not support Linux or Chrome OS.
    • Desktop computer or laptop (tablets, Chromebook and cell phones do not meet our requirements).
    • A working built-in or external webcam and microphone.
    • Internet speed must be at least 2 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload. Hot spots are not recommended.
    • Chrome browser with pop-up blocker disabled.
  • Take an automated practice exam when one is made available by your instructor.
  • You may need to clear Chrome's cache and cookies.
  • You may need to update your system preferences to allow Chrome access to your camera, microphone, and screen recording.

FAQs

What data does Examity collect for proctoring?

Typically, and whenever possible, only essential, limited test-taker data and test data are collected to proctor your test. This may include:

  • Data to authenticate you as the test-taker for an exam (such as your name, ID, biometric signature, and responses to challenge questions)

Where is my data stored?

Examity uses an SSAE-certified data center that adheres to the EU-US Privacy Shield Framework to manage and process data for its daily operations.

Does Examity meet common regulations that apply to data processing?

Yes. Examity is fully compliant with regulations that govern the storage and transmission of your data, including but not limited to FERPA, FIPPA, GDPR, and HIPAA.

What additional steps are taken by Examity beyond following government regulations?

Along with being fully compliant with all government regulations, Examity maintains industry-leading security through the use of SSAE-16 certified data centers, role-based authorization, and PCI compliance for secure transactions.

How can I be sure my data is safe?

In addition to meeting the above privacy regulations and storing data in accordance with the highest standards, Examity has database-wide encryption used for data security both at transmission and at rest.

Will the proctor be able to access my computer?

MTSU uses the Automated Premium version of Examity.  A live proctor will never have access to your computer using this version of Examity unless it is to troubleshoot technical issues, they will always request permission first and will only gain access to the mouse and keyboard. If you grant access, you will always have the ability to revoke privileges. 

Do I have to download Examity / does anything stay on my computer?

No. You may be asked to add a browser extension, but nothing is installed on your computer. The extension will be automatically removed from your browser after the exam.

Is Examity LTI 1.3 certified, and what does that mean in regards to the level of security that Examity provides?

Examity became LTI 1.3 certified in September of 2019. This certification is the gold standard in education technology. IMS Global’s LTI Advantage enables a more secure exchange of student data between education tools and systems and is designed to enhance data privacy for higher education institutions, states, and technology developers. Examity is the first and only online proctoring provider to be certified at the new standards. 

Will Examity need to collect any of my financial data?

Examity will never ask for your financial information… MTSU has purchased a University wide license for Examity.
