algebra'scool: 99 Interactive High School Algebra 1 Lessons for Use by Teachers in Classrooms

Directed the creation of algebra’scool, an unprecedented interactive DVD program to help teachers teach high school Algebra 1. Designed the system to take advantage of the sight, sound, motion, and interactivity offered by the DVD medium. Created visualizations of the mathematical processes as a more natural and intuitive way to learn. Used interactivity to keep the program “alive” so that it could respond to students’ and teachers’ needs. A study by Princeton Review showed that students in algebra’scool classrooms learned three times more effectively than the control group. (click here for whitepaper) The product was recognized with numerous accoladed including the Golden Lamp Award form the Association of Educational Publishers as the best instructional materials of the year, and by the Telly Awards as the best instruction video of the last 25 years.

        ZOOOS Interactive Video System

Inventor of the ZOOOOS interactive video system. Multiple patents worldwide. ZOOOOS is an interactive video system that enables the creation of highly interactive video-based programs on commonly available systems such as DVD players and digital video recorders (DVRs). The system uses a special controller and specially authored programs, and can be implemented on ordinary DVD players, DVRs, game platforms, computers, and other devices capable of delivering non-linear video. Besides the fact that it works on an enormous base of common devices, the essential advantage of the system is its simplicity and intuitive interface. Where other systems have deep layers of complexity, ZOOOOS is designed to be as simple as possible for users. ZOOOOS has been used to publish a number of educational programs for Pre-K through second grade, and are aligned to educational standards for each target group.

ZOOOOS Review from New York Times, December 21, 2006

Circuits; Behind the Bright Buttons and Fun Lies an Interactive Learning Tool

        By WARREN BUCKLEITNER

Most interactive DVD systems for children feel about as interactive as a vending machine. The ZOOOOS Play and Learn DVD System is an exception. Created for preschoolers by the same team that worked on the TiVo interface, the ZOOOOS Play and Learn DVD System consists of a boomerang-shaped infrared remote control with four brightly colored buttons. As with other specialized remotes, there's a one-time task of entering a code to match your brand of DVD player.

ZOOOOS works with six DVDs, and two of them are included in a $30 starter kit available at www.funrise.com. Other titles ($15 each) feature Spider-Man and Thomas the Tank Engine. In one game, children explore numbers, pressing a button to show the numeral scratched in the sand or read in Spanish. Another disc mixes clips of animals from the San Diego Zoo with animal facts.

The inventor of the system, Billy Pittard, came up with the eight-button remote after wrestling with awkward DVD controllers with 50 or more buttons. ZOOOOS, pronounced like the Greek god, tries to make a DVD player act more like a computer -- itself a task of mythical proportions. WARREN BUCKLEITNER

        ZOOOOS Interactive DVDs

I designed, directed, and produced all of the interactive DVDs for the ZOOOOS Interactive DVD system. Each DVD was filled with a variety of interactive content aligned with educational standards. The first DVD was based upon characters and a scenario called Sandy Lane that I created for this purpose. Other titles included licensed characters such as Spiderman, Bob the Builder, and Thomas the Tank Engine, as well as an animal adventure license with the San Diego Zoo.

        • Bob the Builder: Can You Build It?
        • Sandy Lane School
        • Sandy Lane Bookshelf
        • San Diego Zoo Animal Explorer
        • Spider-Man Interactive Adventures
