Dr. Henrique Momm
I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Geosciences at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, U.S.A. My research interests are on integrating Geographic Information Science with Computational Science, also referred to as Geoinformatics, to improve basic understanding of Earth functions. I have made contributions in this field to support research of watershed systems modeling and characterization, studies of channel morphology and evolution through laboratory and field experiments, and advanced information extraction from remotely sensed imagery.
I am also a faculty member of the Center for Computational Science and the director of the Geospatial Research Center (GRC), an interdisciplinary research and educational initiative designed to increase the use and awareness of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial analysis, and remote sensing.
Before coming to MTSU, I worked several years at the National Sedimentation Laboratory (NSL), where I researched spatial and temporal dynamics of erosional components at different scales through a combination of Geoinformatics, hydrological modeling, field data, and laboratory experiments. I continue to collaborate with scientists at the NSL in multiple research projects. I am also a member of the of the scientific/development team of the U.S. Department of Agriculture supported Annualized Agricultural Non-Point Source (AnnAGNPS) pollutant loading model.
In Spring of 2008, I earned my Ph.D. degree in the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering at The University of Mississippi, in Oxford, Mississippi, U.S.A. In my dissertation, "Evolutionary Computation for Information Extraction from Remotely Sensed Imagery", I researched the use of advanced machine learning algorithms to extract information from high-resolution imagery for infrastructure damage assessment. My dissertation advisor was Dr. Greg Easson.
