First Amendment News and Insights from MTSU

James Madison University

At James Madison University in Virginia, surveys showed a fairly high level of understanding on campus of the First Amendment. So the 1 for All project set out to raise the bar even higher.

Strategies and tactics included making a "Do You Know Your Freedoms?" video, taking the novel approach of having a student dress up as James Madison and going around campus quizzing fellow students about their First Amendment rights. Another approach involved a social media campaign. And a third entailed two "free food" festivals at which students had to either surrender some of their freedoms to get food, or read pertinent news articles showing the importance of the First Amendment.

With a second 1 for All grant, JMU created a “Like It's Your Job” PR campaign "to give students safe and inclusive outlets to practice their First Amendment rights."
