John Hood was the representative for the 48th District in the Tennessee General Assembly House of Representatives from 1996-2008. He was also formerly a member of the Rutherford County Commission and the Murfreesboro School Board. This collection houses records from Hood’s tenure as representative in Tennessee’s congress.

Biographical Note

John Hood has served Middle Tennessee State University and the state of Tennessee most of his career. Born in Rutherford County in 1931, he attended Crichlow Elementary, Central High School, and graduated from Middle Tennessee State College (later MTSU) with his B.S. in 1954. Upon his graduation from MTSC, he served in the U.S. Army in the Army Security Agency from 1954 until 1956. Following his military service, Mr. Hood worked in broadcasting at WGNS and WMTS.

Over the years he has held several positions at Middle Tennessee State University, including the first director of Development, administrative assistance to President Melvin G. Scarlett, and starting in 2008 as director of Government and Community Affairs. During this time he continued his education at Middle Tennessee State University and earned his M.ED. in 1974.

Mr. Hood worked at Sun Trust Bank as the Vice President of Marketing from 1976 until 1996, his election as State Representative. Previous to his tenure in the Tennessee Legislature, he served on the Rutherford County Commission from 1966 until 1976. After John Bragg retired from politics, Mr. Hood ran for and won the election for state representation in Tennessee 48th District, serving in that capacity from 1996 until 2008.

cope and Content: The John Hood papers consist of political papers related to his time as an elected official. The bulk of the papers include materials related to legislation passed while he was a representative. The collection also includes papers on transportation committees, TennCare budgets, State Budgets reports, and correspondence from constituents.
