Jerry Futrell was a longtime friend and political supporter of Albert Gore, Sr. and Albert Gore, Jr. He also worked on Al Gore, Jr.'s 1988 Presidential campaign. The collection includes magazines, newspaper articles, photographs, campaign buttons, and other materials related to Al Gore Jr.'s 1988 Presidential campaign, as well as President Clinton's 1992 and 1996 Presidential campaigns.

Biographical Note

Jerry Futrell was a pharmacist from Carthage, Tennessee, and a friend of Albert Gore, Sr. and his family for over 35 years. He was also a supporter of Albert Gore, Jr. during his 1988 campaign for president, and he contributed money to Gore’s campaign, and spoke in interviews during the 1988 and 1992 campaigns. He also worked as a campaign organizer for Gore during the 1988 campaign, and he was appointed as a legislative adviser on the staff of Representative Lincoln Davis. As a longtime friend of the Gores, he collected correspondence, newspaper articles, and magazines from the 1988 and 1992 presidential campaigns. These documents are included in the collection. Scope and Content

Records in the Jerry Futrell Collection range from 1980-1996. The bulk of the collection ranges from 1988-1992. The collection consists of newspaper and magazine clippings, correspondence, and some contribution checks from citizens who supported Albert Gore, Jr.’s 1988 campaign. The first box of the collection consists of correspondence between Al Gore and his supporters, as well as campaign materials. Magazines and newspaper clippings are in boxes two through four, and they cover the 1988 presidential campaign when Gore was a presidential candidate, as well as the 1992 campaign when Gore ran as vice-president with Bill Clinton. The remaining three boxes contain political memorabilia, including t-shirts, hats, canvas bags, and fans. Researchers who are interested in studying the presidential campaign of Al Gore in 1988 or the political campaign of Bill Clinton in 1992 will find this collection useful.

Series 1: Events (6 folders) (1987-1996) This series includes reception invitations, letters, and memos for the 1993 Presidential Inauguration. There are also letters, memos, and invitations for the 1988, 1992, and 1996 Democratic National Conventions. The series also includes one folder with a Finance Council Itinerary and a flyer for the Red Boiling Springs Folk Medicine Festival on June, 27, 1987.

Series 2: Correspondence (10 folders) (1987-1988) This series includes letters and memos between Albert Gore, Jr. and Jerry Futrell. There are also photocopies of checks sent by campaign supporters, as well as contact lists for people who participated in the 1988 presidential campaign for the Democratic Party. There are also letters from Hank Hillin who wrote a biography about Albert Gore, Jr.

Series 3: Campaign Materials (5 folders) (1987-1992) This series includes a campaign speech by Albert Gore, Jr. in June 1987 as well as campaigning schedules. The collection also includes fliers and campaign donation cards from the 1988 presidential campaign, and postcards for the 1992 presidential campaign.

Series 4: Photographs (2 folders) (1988-1992) This series contains one folder with photocopies of photographs from the 1988 campaign. There is a second folder with photographs from the 1992 presidential campaign with Bill Clinton and Al Gore. There are also some photographs of Bart Gordon and other local politicians in the collection.

Series 5: Politics (3 folders) (1992-1993) This series contains a copy of the Regional Organized Crime Information Prospectus which discusses crime prevention. Also included is a copy of President Clinton’s Economic Plan, as well as papers on NAFTA’s provisions and labor and environmental cooperation agreements.

Series 6: Publications (35 folders) (1970; 1985-1998) This series includes magazines which contain articles about President Gore’s 1988 Presidential Campaign, as well as magazines which contain articles from President Clinton’s 1992 Presidential Campaign. Some of the magazines included are “People,” “Good Housekeeping,” “Southern Magazine,” and “Tennessee Illustrated.” The magazines cover 1985-1992. There is one copy of the “Safety Service” from May 1970. There are also two additional boxes of newspaper articles dated 1984-1998. The bulk of these newspapers are dated 1987-1988 and 1992-1993. They cover the 1988 and 1992 Presidential Campaigns, as well as President Clinton’s first Presidential Inauguration.

Series 7: Political Memorabilia (3 Boxes) (Date) This series Includes t-shirts, hats, canvas bags, fans, campaign buttons, and other memorabilia related to Bill Clinton’s 1992 Presidential campaign.
