Biographical Note
Robert Evins Pickard had an active political career, but most famously worked as a staff member for Al Gore, Jr.’s 1988 presidential campaign.
Scope and Content
These papers primarily document Pickard’s work as a staff member for Al Gore’s presidential campaign. The collection of papers contains personal correspondence with several political figures, correspondence within the Gore campaign, media coverage of the Gore campaign, Pickard’s scholarly work on political issues, and photographs documenting campaign activity as well as overseas Peace Corps work and travel. Four audio cassette tapes containing Pickard lectures, as well as an oral history interview of Father John Badeen, are included in the collection. Also contained within this collection are three items pertaining to other family members. An autobiography from Bob Pickard’s uncle, Ted M. George, who was a local Tennessee resident, covers his service in WWII, his return after the war when he obtained his PhD in physics from Vanderbilt University, and his following career in academics. Bob Pickard and his friend Ron Messier, history professor at MTSU, filmed a documentary covering the life of Bob’s cousin, John Pickard, who was an actor in many films and television shows. There is also a memorial booklet on the life of Pickard’s mother, Kathryn Parrotte.
