Biographical Note

Olen E. Hutchison was convicted in the first-degree murder of Hugh Huddleston in 1990 and was sentenced to death in 1991. All of the six co-defendants, including three who were present at the scene of the crime, received lesser sentences. Mr. Hutchison was in another county at the time of the crime.

Mr. Hutchison contacted the Tennessee Innocence Project for help in 2001 after his conviction.
The Olen Hutchison Clemency Team was formed in 2003. Mary E. Vancura was the clemency campaign coordinator. The Clemency Team constructed a website, conducted fundraising, and engaged in a variety of promotion and outreach activities designed to bring attention to the “lack of equal justice” in the Olen Hutchison case.

Mr. Hutchison’s execution was scheduled for March 2004 but he received a stay of execution in January 2004. Hutchison, remained death row and continued his attempts to appeal his case. He died of natural causes at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution on October 19, 2014.

The Olen Hutchison Clemency Team papers include Hutchison’s application to the Tennessee Innocence Project and the Clemency Team’s email correspondence, meeting notes, and some research. The collection spans the years 2001 through 2004 and is contained in one box in roughly chronological order.
