Biographical Note

Horace Jones, a math professor and Hall of Famer, recruited Charles "Bubber" Murphy to play sports at Middle Tennessee State Teachers College in 1934. Competing brilliantly in four sports (football, baseball, basketball, and tennis), Murphy sometimes reportedly finished football practice then dropped by the tennis court to defeat all opponents. After graduation, he signed with the New York Giants and also played baseball in the military during World War II.
Murphy returned to Middle Tennessee in 1947 as a coach, and the American Football Coaches Association named him national Coach of the Year in 1965.  Murphy also served as the university’s athletic director from 1968 to 1980.  MTSU inducted him into their Raider Hall of Fame in 1976.  The Charles M. Murphy Athletic Center opened in 1972 and was dedicated in his honor.
