Biographical Note

Elizabeth Burke Schardt taught foreign languages at Middle Tennessee State University (then Middle Tennessee Normal and later Middle Tennessee State Teachers College) for forty-three years beginning in 1918.  Educated at St. Cecilia Academy in Nashville, University of Tennessee, and George Peabody College for Teachers, Miss Schardt also studied in Belgium, Mexico, South America, and Japan. 
During her tenure at MTSU, Miss Schardt co-founded Tau Omicron women’s honor society in 1931 and served as its advisor until her retirement in 1961.  In addition, she served as advisor for “Sidelines” campus newspaper and was active in the American Association of University Women, Delta Kappa Gamma honorary society for women teachers, Murfreesboro Women’s Club, Oaklands Association, League of Women Voters, and the Association for Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities.  While teaching at Middle Tennessee Normal, Miss Schardt was the foreign language instructor in the army training corps program for campus World War I military units.  Miss Schardt died 29 June1971 at the age of eighty-one.
This collection was saved by MTSU’s Residence Hall management and maintenance staff and was placed in the Gore Center January 2001 for preservation. 

Scope and Content

This one-box collection includes 3 series: “Correspondence: 1963-64,” “Memorabilia,” and “Publications.” Correspondence includes letters advising Schardt of a building named in her honor, as well as congratulatory letters. Memorabilia includes invitations and programs related to Schardt’s retirement, honorary building dedication, and graduation from Peabody College. Publications include newspaper clippings and a magazine article related to the dedication of Schardt Hall.
