Biographical Note

In 1927, May Winston Caldwell, her husband, and the Ladies’ Battlefield Association erected a memorial to commemorate the Civil War Battle of Nashville, the last major western theatre campaign of 1864. The original Battle of Nashville Monument was located on four acres at Franklin Road and Thompson Lane in Nashville. The monument was restored and relocated to a park at the intersection of Granny White Pike and Battlefield Drive in the 1990s after a strong storm in 1974 badly damaged the monument and left it in poor condition. James Summerville, with the cooperation of The Association for Tennessee History and other organizations, was instrumental in the restoration, relocation and rededication initiative.
