Biographical Note
James Gillespie was the aviation manager for Gillespie Airfield, a Nashville commercial flight center, during the 1940s and 1950s. As aviation manager, Gillespie kept various business records regarding the purchases of aircraft equipment, inspection reports of aircraft, and correspondence with various vendors. In addition, he subscribed to aviation related publications and received numerous bulletins and newsletters from the Civil Aeronautics Board.
Scope and Content
The James Gillespie Papers include correspondence, accounts and ledgers, logs and logbooks, aviation advertisements, news clippings, flight charts and maps, reports on airplanes, artifacts collected by Gillespie and from Gillespie Airways, aviation related publications and serial publications, such as AERO Digest, Aviation Week, and Flight Magazine. The papers cover topics such as airport site proposals, aircraft parts, vendor relations, airfield finances, airplane inspection, flight records, student flight charts, airplane product advertisements, regional airfield maps, national aeronautics standards, personal artifacts, air shows, contemporary thoughts in aviation, and aviation in the Middle Tennessee area. The papers also contain photographs of Gillespie Airfield and images of various airplanes.
