The Buchanan Fellowship

*** WE OFFER TWO SUBMISSION DEADLINE OPTIONS. PLEASE SELECT ONE OPTION WHEN YOU OPEN YOUR APPLICATION***

  • All applications must be submitted by December 1, 2023 no later than 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time.
  • If you are selecting early acceptance (see below), applications must be submitted by November 1, 2023 no later than 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time.

We are pleased to offer early admission to a select number of students who apply for the Buchanan Fellowship by November 1, 2023. In order to qualify, students will be asked to include with their application a signed statement indicating that MTSU is their top choice and, that if admitted into the Buchanan Program, they will accept. Students who cannot conscientiously sign this letter, should apply through the regular application process with the December 1st deadline.

Students who choose not to apply for early admission or those who apply but are not accepted will receive full consideration for the Buchanan Fellowship under the guidelines that apply to December 1st applicants.

OPTION ONE: November 1st Early Review Deadline. Student must commit to accepting the Buchanan Fellowship in December.

This means you want to be considered for early decision for the Buchanan Fellowship. You will need to submit your application by November 1st  and commit to the Buchanan program if offered. If you are not offered the Buchanan in the first group, your application will still be considered with the December 1st deadline group. All ACT/SAT scores must be submitted by November 1st with your application.

OPTION TWO: December 1st Regular Review Deadline.

You do not want to be considered for the Buchanan Fellowship early acceptance. You would like to be reviewed with the December 1st group. You are unsure about what college is best for you and need additional time.

The Honors College is home to the Buchanan Fellowship program, named in honor of MTSU's Nobel Prize winning alumnus, Dr. James M. Buchanan. The Buchanan Fellowship, limited to 20 students per year, is the highest award given to an entering freshman at Middle Tennessee State University.

Buchanan Fellows, who must complete a separate application process limited to first-time freshmen, receive a host of special benefits including a full tuition waiver (up to 16 hours per semester) guaranteed for four years (excluding summers), special seminars, priority registration, a book allowance, access to additional scholarships for study abroad, and much more (up to $5,000).
