White HouseUH 3500: The Constitutional and Political Legacy of America's Founders

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course has the distinct advantage of being an interdisciplinary course. This course will include discussions of documents in early American history and government with particular emphasis on individuals who helped shaped the U.S. Constitution and the early American Republic. It culminates in on-site participation, observations, and visits to educational, cultural, and historic sites. Academically, this course will provide an experiential learning experience allowing a wide variety of majors to understand from a scholarly and professional perspective the foundation of American history and government.

During the week of Spring Break 2024, some historic places this course will travel to in the Virginia and Washington, D.C., area include Popular Forest, Monticello, Montpelier, Historic St. John’s Church, Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg, Mt. Vernon, Gunston Hall, the National Archives, the U.S. Capitol Building, historic monuments in the District of Columbia, the Smithsonian Institution, and much more!

CLASS INFORMATION:

This study away trip includes seven class periods and seven travel days over spring break. We will meet on Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. prior to Spring Break. We leave for the travel portion of our class on a Saturday on a Saturday.

This course counts for three hours interdisciplinary honors credit (UH 3500) or may be substituted for PS 4820. You may also participate in the trip without being registered for the course.

CapitolCOST: (subject to change)

  • $1,982 double occupancy
  • $2,518 single occupancy

COST INCLUDES: coach transportation, lodging, cultural activities, excursions with guides, two lunches, and daily breakfast.

NOT INCLUDED: tuition and some meals. Partial scholarships are available through the Honors College.

Desposit of $500 will be due in advance. Deadline for remainder of the cost will be later.


The course and trip are limited to 25 students and you must have a 3.25 GPA to apply.
