Fall 2022 Event

Complex problem-solving is one of the skills most desired of college graduates today, so each year, during MT Engage week, the College of Liberal Arts engages students from across campus, in all majors, to address a pressing problem on campus.  The undeniable choice for Fall 2022 was the mental health crises.  Inside Higher Education’s January 13, 2022, edition reports that students were more stressed in January 2022 than they were in January 2021, due in part to the variants of the COVID-19 virus that have caused them to question, “Is this ever going to end?” This uncertainty, coupled with the isolation they have experienced, is causing them to struggle and to realize that they are not going to get a typical college experience.

At MTSU, we wanted to let students know that they are not alone in addressing these challenges.  The College of Liberal Arts organized, with seven other colleges/departments on campus, a De-Stress for Success event to inform students about the resources we have on campus and in the community as well as tactics to manage common college stressors, such as sleep deprivation, work/life balance, social anxiety, and prioritizing nutrition and exercise.

This webpage will serve as a repository of the information handed out at this event, for those who did not have time to visit us that day. Our hope is that these aids will bring calm into students’ lives.  College is filled with pressures of many kinds. ”The secret to getting past them is to stay calm,” a position that enables students to function better and make good decisions (calmsage.com/keep-calm-quotes).  One of the decisions that will be most helpful during these unusual times is to manage expectations and allow ourselves to accept the gifts and the days we are given, even if they are not what we expected.  We hope that our students find these resources helpful in doing just that.
