CLA Scholarships

CLA Study Abroad Scholarship

In an effort to encourage students to participate in one of the many MTSU Signature faculty-led study abroad programs, the College of Liberal Arts will offer several scholarships of up to $1000 each for study abroad activities.

Eligibility:

  1. Student must have a declared major or minor in the College of Liberal Arts.

  2. Undergraduate students must have completed 30 hours prior to the semester in which the award will be made, with at least 15 of those hours earned at MTSU. Graduate students must have completed 9 hours prior to the semester in which the award will be made, with all 9 hours earned at MTSU.

  3. Student must have a GPA greater than or equal to 2.5.

  4. Preference will be given to students participating in a CLA faculty-led study abroad program.

  5. Applicants should submit the following electronically to cla@mtsu.edu:

    1. A letter, which includes the student's M#, outlining eligibility requirements 1-3 above, describing the activity for which the student is requesting support, indicating the economic necessity of the scholarship, and noting how the activity will contribute to the student's professional development or plan of study (maximum length of three pages),
    2. a budget, listing costs and all other anticipated funding (except student loans),
    3. a letter of recommendation from a Liberal Arts faculty member or advisor emailed from the recommender to cla@mtsu.edu.

Deadline: The deadline for Spring Break 2022 faculty-led study abroad scholarship applications is Friday, December 17, 2021. The deadline for Summer/Fall 2022 study abroad scholarship applications is Friday, February 18, 2022. Your application, including letter of recommendation, must be received no later than noon on that date to receive scholarship consideration.

 

Geraldine Sayward Scholarship

The Geraldine Sayward Scholarship will be awarded to the student of any major in the College of Liberal Arts preparing for an International Education Abroad experience who has shown excellence in academics and who best exemplifies the personal attributes of Geraldine, which include her passion for international travel abroad and lifelong learning. To be eligible for consideration candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Have cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • Have declared a major or minor in Liberal Arts
  • Have completed at least 30 credit hours
  • Preference given to a student participating in an MTSU faculty-led Education Abroad program
  • Submit a personal statement (no more than 750 words) explaining how her/his life reflects the values modeled by Geraldine Sayward and how these values will influence their education abroad experience. Also include details on the activity for which the student is requesting support and how the activity will contribute to the plan of study.
  • Submit a letter of recommendation from a Liberal Arts faculty member or advisor.
  • Applicants must submit all materials to cla@mtsu.edu

Deadline: The deadline is Friday, February 18, 2022. Your application, including letter of recommendation, must be received no later than noon on that date to receive scholarship consideration.

 

Elrod Family Scholarship

To be eligible for consideration for this award, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • A student whose parent(s) did not receive a bachelor degree
  • Be a full-time student pursuing an undergraduate degree major in the College of Liberal Arts and completed the required minimum credit hours (60 hours) to be a junior or senior level classification
  • Have an overall minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale at the time of application
  • The scholarship may provide funding for an international educational experience that supports the student’s degree program
  • Each award is for one academic year or summer term. Prior recipients are not disqualified from consideration for this award during subsequent years.  Should the recipient become ineligible to receive the funds, another candidate may be selected using the criteria above.
  • Applicants must submit all materials to cla@mtsu.edu .

Mary Foye Huhta Memorial Award

To be eligible for consideration for this award, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Have an overall minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale at the time of the application
  • Have declared a major in the College of Liberal Arts, with an expressed interest in participating in government, local politics, and civic engagement
  • Have earned at least 60 credit hours
  • Be a full-time student
  • Preference given to a student who has completed a credit-bearing internship or experiential learning activity related to government, local politics, or civic engagement, or who otherwise shows evidence of involvement in government service, local politics, or civic engagement
  • First preference will be given to a resident of Rutherford County.
  • Applicants must submit a 1 – 2-page document outlining the internship or activity which the student has completed and how the activity has contributed to the student’s professional development or plan of study in government, local politics, or civic engagement.
  • If a recipient fails to maintain the required level of academic performance, or changes to a major/minor outside those specified, the recipient shall forfeit any unpaid balance of the award.
  • Submit a letter of recommendation from a Liberal Arts faculty member or advisor.
  • Applicants must submit all materials to cla@mtsu.edu .
