What is SOAR?
A new student organization compromised of undergraduate students who are committed to developing and sustaining an active and successful undergraduate research environment at MTSU.
To enhance student’s research capacity through increased awareness, collaboration and skill building.
- SOAR will enhance a student’s research capacity through increased awareness, collaboration and skill building by offering workshops and trainings to fulfill the needs of undergraduate researchers.
- SOAR will assist students in the preparation of poster presentations and development of abstracts to increase conference presence on a national level, encourage students to attend the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, and facilitate travel preparations.
- SOAR will provide peer mentoring to students new to undergraduate research.
The founding Members of the newly formed student organization known as SOAR (Student Organization for the Advancement of Research) hosted their first business meeting in the MT Center on Nov. 20. David Butler, vice provost for research, and Jeff Porter, director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, joined the members for lunch and a conversation surrounding the importance of undergraduate research and creative activity.
SOAR members also hosted their first event, Snacks and Abstracts, on Nov. 22. Undergraduate students crafted their abstract submissions for the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, which takes place in Bozeman, Montana, in Spring 2020. Heather Dray with SAGE Publishing joined the group for fine-tuning and feedback.
