Instructions for Faculty about MTSU Course Types

This table should assist faculty course developers and chairs as they plan their various online courses. Some additional resources include the Registrar’s course types page, and the MTSU Online course proposal and development process.

Asynchronous OnlineAsynchronous online through the learning management system (LMS).Cannot have any required synchronous meetings or any in-person on-ground meetings.

Optional meetings or orientations, such as “virtual office hours,” may be offered.

Students cannot be penalized for non-attendance.

A good practice would be to record and share any optional virtual meetings.

If proctored exams are required, they must be listed in the registration notes and course schedule.

The instructor must hold synchronous meetings at least once per week.

The student can choose from session to session whether to attend on-ground or synchronous online (via video). 

Students choose to meet in either format throughout the semester based on their needs.

Instruction will be synchronous, meaning students will participate in instruction sessions on the assigned days and times of the course, just as they would with an on-ground course. 

The instructor must hold synchronous meetings at least once per week.
