Biography

Dr. Sarah Garven holds a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama, an MBA from the University of Tennessee, and a bachelor’s degree from Lipscomb University. Prior to joining Middle Tennessee State University, she served on the faculty at Ohio University and Morehead State University. She is an active Certified Public Accountant (Ohio) and has auditing experience in both Big 4 public accounting and industry.

Dr. Sarah Garven holds a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama, an MBA from the University of Tennessee, and a bachelor’s degree from Lipscomb University. Prior to joining Middle Tennessee State University, she served on the faculty at Ohio University and Morehead State University. She is an active Certified Public Accountant (Ohio) and has auditing experience in both Big 4 public accounting and industry.

Dr. Garven currently teaches Internal Auditing and Principles of Financial Accounting, and is the coordinator of the Internal Audit Education Partnership (IAEP) Program at MTSU. Her primary area of research focuses on the impact of corporate governance mechanisms, especially auditors, on the management of financial results in both the for-profit and nonprofit settings. She has articles published in journals such as Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory, Nonprofit Management & Leadership, and the CPA Journal. She and her husband, Brian, have three children: Claire, Ethan, and Brooke.
