Biography

Dr. Shannon Harmon, Associate Professor in the Department of Elementary and Special Education, earned her B.A. in Communications from Mississippi State University, her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction and Ed D. in Elementary Education from the University of Mississippi. She joined MTSU in 2013 where she works within the K-5 Elementary Education Residency 1 Program which allows her the opportunity to mentor teacher candidates and partner with schools in Rutherford and surrounding ...

Dr. Shannon Harmon, Associate Professor in the Department of Elementary and Special Education, earned her B.A. in Communications from Mississippi State University, her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction and Ed D. in Elementary Education from the University of Mississippi. She joined MTSU in 2013 where she works within the K-5 Elementary Education Residency 1 Program which allows her the opportunity to mentor teacher candidates and partner with schools in Rutherford and surrounding counties in Middle Tennessee. Dr. Harmon’s Residency 1 courses, Assessing the Elementary Level Learner and Theory into Practice are EXL and MT Engage designated. She strives for excellence when teaching these courses by ensuring teacher candidates are focused on how their instruction and interactions affect K-5 learners. Dr. Harmon also models best practices by providing support, encouragement, and feedback to her teacher candidates as they make the transition from student to professional.   

Dr. Harmon is actively involved in the Tennessee Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, Association of Teacher Educators, and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. She received the MTSU Outstanding Teaching Award in August 2022, was named MTSU’s Favorite Professor in 2015 by the 21st Annual Ruthies Awards and has been recognized by graduating seniors as a person making a difference for twelve consecutive semesters.

Research / Scholarly Activity

Dr. Harmon’s research focuses on examining field-based experiences and aims to support teacher candidates in implementing instruction that meets the needs of all learners. She uses her research to enhance the Residency program as it seeks to produce candidates who are well-prepared for the teaching field. She also uses her research to further enhance the effectiveness of her teaching.
