book cover

The CJA department is sponsoring a book signing for Dr. Carter Smith, a retired Army CID Agent. Dr. Smith's new book, Gangs and the Military: Gangsters, Bikers, and Terrorists with Military Training, combines personal experiences, historical documents, government reports, and current events in a book that crosses non-fiction writing genres, with a combination of memoir and American and military history connected with a social studies, criminology, and true crime thread.

Gang experts have described the book as a "must read for anyone concerned with the gang problem in America," including "clearly articulated evidence of the infiltration of the gangster mentality within our nation's military branches," that is "well researched, very comprehensive and well proven."

The book documents some well-known military-trained gang members, such as the land pirates who traveled the Natchez Trace after the Revolutionary War and the James Brothers who robbed banks, trains, and stagecoaches after the Civil War, as well as some that are not as well-known, like the Street Gangster turned World War I veteran Monk Eastman.

The event will be on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM CDT, in the first floor lobby of the MTSU College of Education, located at 1756 MTSU Blvd, Murfreesboro, TN 37132.

Please RSVP if you plan to get a book, so the bookstore can ensure there are enough copies.  You can RSVP at the event page on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/events/1980066428881163/ or at Eventbrite - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/gangs-and-the-military-by-professor-carter-f-smith-tickets-37470707896
