College is a great step to furthering and becoming what you've dreamed of throughout your life, but, unlike high school, it is step of independence and becoming an adult. You have to figure out so many different things and you have to find people in order to get the help and information you need. As a young adult coming out of foster care and doing things independently most of my life, college was a very big change and extremely challenging in many areas such as: applying, setting up customs, finding funding, registration, housing, and etc. My struggle throughout these very things is the reason being a student mentor through Next Step is something I've chosen to do. Being an independent youth, whatever situation, it is very beneficial to have someone who really understands your struggle and wants to help you have a successful college experience. In my experience it is hard to get in the groove of college but I'm sure if I would've had a student who could relate to me helping me and showing me the ends and outs it would have been a smoother process. College is a wonderful experience and it doesn't have to be stressful and struggling, it should be exciting! I am here to help you through the steps, help answer any of your questions, or hang out and talk if things get too overwhelming. My email is jar6w@mtmail.mtsu.edu, you can email me anytime and I'll be happy to help!
