Physics 1600: The Physics of Music

A general outline of the topics covered in the course PHYS160: The Physics of Music is given below. The course was developed with Recording Industy students in mind; however, interested students from all departments are welcome. The aim of the course is to introduce students to the scientific approach to understanding a cross section of topics in musical acoustics. A conceptual and qualitative approach is emphasized rather than a detailed mathematical treatment, although some math and algebra is essential. Part of the course grade is based on a special project so that students who are more technically inclined can pursue subjects of more mathematical rigor, whereas those with math aversion can select predominantly qualitative topics. Although there is no lab associated with the course there are a large number of in-class demos (many of them are exquisitely neat, if I do say so myself).
