THE TRUE BLUE CORE

Structure of the Core

The True Blue Core general education requirement is an easy-to-follow, menu-driven program organized in a way intended to highlight  the foundational skills and knowledge students need to succeed personally and professionally. 

IMPORTANT NOTE: Students under a pre-2024 catalog must complete the general education requirements found here: MTSU General Education. True Blue Core courses may not be used to meet general education requirements prior to 2024. Please consult your advisor.

FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS

Students choose one course (ie. 3 credit hours) from each of the four Foundational Skills. View the list of approved courses for these categories here: TBC Approved Courses

Written Communication (WC) (3 hours)

Information Literacy (Info Lit) (3 hours)

Non-written Communication  (NWC) (3 hours)

Quantitative Literacy (Quant Lit) (3 hours)

KNOWLEDGE DOMAINS

Students must choose courses from each of the four knowledge domains. Make sure you look at the hours requirements in each category The Discovery courses are intended to introduce students to the key concepts in the Social and Behavioral Sciences, the Natural Sciences, the Humanities/Fine Arts, and History.

Human Society and Social Relationships (HSSR) (6 hours)

Students choose two courses (i.e. 6 credit hours) in this category. At least one course must be selected from the Discovery category and the second course can be either Discovery or Explorations. View the list of approved courses for this category here: TBC Approved Courses

Discovery in Social and Behavioral Sciences

Scientific Literacy (Sci Lit) (8 hours)

Students choose two courses (i.e. 8 credit hours) in this category. At least one course must be selected from the Discovery category and the second course can be either Discovery or Explorations. View the list of approved courses for this category here:  TBC Approved Courses

Explorations in Sci Lit

Creativity & Cultural Expression (CCE) (9 hours)

Students choose three courses (i.e. 9 credit hours) in this category. At least one course must be a literature course (ENGL 2020, ENGL 2030, HUM 2610) one course must be selected from the Discovery category, and the third course can be either Discovery or Explorations.
