Mathematics Department Scholarships and Awards

Abstract Algebra Award

Selected by Faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Given in the spring semester to an outstanding junior or senior mathematics major.  3.0 GPA Cumulative.  3.5 in math courses. Recommended by MATH 4510 instructors. 

B. L. Hong Memorial Scholarship

Selected by Dr. Don Hong, MTSU Department of Mathematical Sciences. Recipients must be enrolled full-time. Recipients will be students in the actuarial science program who have passed three or more professional exams from the Society of Actuaries.

Charles F. & Ethel E. Lewis

Selected by Faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences.  Given in the spring semester to an outstanding second semester freshman mathematics major. She/he must have good academic and social standing with the university. 

Diane & Jim Miller Teaching Mathematics Scholarship

To be eligible for consideration for scholarship, the student shall be a Tennessee resident and enrolled as a full-time student (12 hours or more).  Preference will be given to students pursuing a degree in Mathematics with intent to teach mathematics. Recipients should have a 3.0 GPA or greater based upon a 4.0 scale and have junior status (having completed 60 or more hours). First preference will be given to students who are first generation college students and have financial need. Prior recipients are not precluded from renewal. Student must apply through the Department of Mathematical Sciences by completing an application.  (link to application form) The recipient will be selected by donors, Diane & Jim Miller and by the Faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Application form

Faculty-Alumni Mathematics Award

Selected by Faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences.  Given in the fall and spring semesters. Award is based on merit and need.  Recipient must have completed 60 semester hours of college work. Minimum of 3.2 GPA overall. 

Frances Stubblefield Calculus I Award:

Selected by the Faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences Calculus I instructors. Given in the fall semester. 

Frances Stubblefield Calculus II Award:

Selected by the Faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences Calculus II instructors. Given in the spring semester.

Harold S. Spraker Senior Mathematics Award:

Selected by Faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The award is given in spring semester to a graduating senior mathematics major. The recipient should be reviewed for a strong mathematics GPA, a strong overall GPA,  level of rigor in math program, level of rigor in overall program, & intent to attend graduate school in mathematics or closely allied field.  

Harold S. Spraker Graduate Award:

Selected by Faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Given in the spring semester to a mathematics graduate teaching assistant who the Department determines to excel in both teaching and studies.

Jesse L. Smith Mathematics Scholarship

Selected by the Math Education faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences.  Given in the fall and spring semesters.  Recipient must have Junior standing with an intention to teach mathematics, 3.2 GPA overall, 3.5 GPA in major. 

Jim & Lucinda Lea Mathematics Scholarship

Selected by the Faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences.  The scholarship is for one academic year. Prior recipients are not precluded from renewal. Student must be enrolled as full-time student (12 hours or more), accepted or enrolled in MTSU, and majoring in mathematics.  Recipients must have a 3.0 GPA or greater based upon a 4.0 scale and have junior status (having completed 60 or more hours). First preference will be given to students choosing the advanced mathematics track. 

Mrs. Leona Drake Mathematics Scholarship:

Selected by Faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Given in the fall and spring semesters to a male mathematics majors.

Melanie E. Haupt Endowed Scholarship: 

Selected by Faulty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Each scholarship is for one academic year. Recipient must be a student majoring in any of the graduate programs in the Department of Mathematics or a student in the Mathematics and Science Education (MSE) Ph.D. program. Recipient must be a full-time teacher, have an overall minimum 3.0 gpa, have earned at least 12 credit hours for undergraduate coursework or enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours as a graduate student or 12 credit hours as an undergraduate student.

Miss Tommie Reynolds Mathematics Scholarship:

Selected by Faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Given in the fall and spring semesters to a male mathematics major.
