Human Performance, Leisure and Sport Management Concentration, Ph.D.
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Human Performance's concentration in Leisure and Sport Management prepares doctoral students to plan and conduct research, design and delivery educational experiences, and to serve their profession as well as the larger society. The doctorate is a research-oriented degree that prepares students to pursue faculty positions in higher education or to provide research and educational services to private industry, public, and non-profit organizations. Under the guidance of expert faculty members, doctoral students in Leisure and Sport Management may explore topics related to leisure, sport, outdoor recreation, tourism, hospitality, and event planning and management. During the program of study, doctoral students complete coursework, take preliminary examinations, and compose a dissertation in a chosen area of specialization.

Standout Graduate Dr. Mike Martinez
Dr. Martinez is a tenured Associate Professor at Louisiana State University and recently completed his 10th year at LSU. He serves as the Director of Online Programs for the School of Kinesiology, overseeing the MS in Sport Management and serving as the liaison between LSU Online and the School for all programs. Dr. Martinez primarily conducts research within the human resource management function of sport organizations, specifically focusing on work experiences of employees within sport. Dr. Martinez has published research in the various sport and general academic journals, including the Journal of Sport Management, International Review of Public and Nonprofit Marketing, Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics, the International Journal of Sport Management, and Sport Marketing Quarterly. He helped found the Journal of Sport Administration and Supervision, serving as editor shortly after, and also was a guest editor for the Journal of Applied Sport Management. Dr. Martinez currently serves as the co-editor for the the Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics. He has made numerous presentations at both regional and national conferences, and also is the past president of the Applied Sport Management Association. Additionally, Dr. Martinez was named as the inaugural recipient of the ASMA Distinguished Service & Mentorship Award in 2022. A graduate of the MSTU Ph.D. program in 2009, Dr. Martinez spent the first few years of his academic career in various roles at Troy University. Prior to entering academia, he worked for several years in college athletics and in non-profit marketing.
