General Tips

General information about MTSU Disability & Access Center

  • The Disability & Access Center (DAC) is about providing equal access and making sure that students have equal opportunities at the college level like any other student. However, as much as the DAC wants students to succeed academically, it does not guarantee success. The DAC does not provide unfair advantages.
  • Student wanting to register with the Disability & Access Center (DAC) should contact the office in a timely fashion. For an incoming students please start the process as soon as possible; however, requests can be made throughout the semester. This is for the benefit of the student having accommodations in place proactively instead of reactively in case any situations arise. Keep in mind that the registration process is relatively seamless but still takes time to process.
  • If transferring from another institution, it is possible documentation may be transferred from other disability services providers. While accommodations can be similar, requests and approved accommodations may differ. Several times, the outline of classes and campus, campus resources available, and the way accommodations are offered may result in a request for utilizing different/additional accommodations.
  • Accommodations will not be provided retroactively; students cannot request for accommodations to be allotted after a timeframe has elapsed (example - after a semester ended) .
  • While the DAC is very attentive to any situation that proceeds with a student, the student also should start to prepare to be a self-advocate. Student is responsible for communicating with professors about the approved accommodation(s) and the process of receiving the accommodations. It is best to continue development of that dialogue with each faculty/staff member.
  • Feel free to use the Adaptive Technology Center and Adaptive Recreation Center.
  • If any situation arises with accommodations, access, and/or discrimination, please inform DAC as soon as possible.

General information for transitioning to MTSU

  • When preparing to attend Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), please make sure to be as proactive as possible: working out details if receiving financial aid, setting up housing, covering tuition and other costs, knowing of available transportation, knowing of ways to navigate the campus, registering for classes, etc. Getting acclimated to the campus is an integral part for any student and attending college for the first time is an adjustment for every student.
  • Like any student taking courses in college, please sharpen your study skills, prepare for each class, and seek available resources. In several instances, students have a much more open schedule than K-12, so many students struggle to adjust to time management and study skills.
  • At some K-12, some individualized tutoring may have been offered. At MTSU, tutoring is provided campus-wide.
  • If available, get involved in possible opportunities at college. Once adjusted and school and other important tasks are in order, enjoy the organizations, volunteer opportunities, and events that are available at MTSU. However, please maintain the right balance that best gives you a college education first.
